National Mutt Day was founded in 2005 "by Celebrity Pet Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige, and is all about embracing, saving and celebrating mixed breed dogs."
What's so great about a mixed breed dog?
Mixed breed dogs make great pets. They are just as smart and equally as loyal as their purebred counterparts. They can be trained to do anything that a purebred dog can do. And they have unique personalities that make them wonderful family members.
What is the goal of National Mutt Day?
The goal of National Mutt Day is to save 10,000 mixed breed dogs by promoting adoption from shelters and rescues across the United States. National Mutt Day is celebrated on December 2.
Why National Mutt Day? Because a large majority of the animals looking for forever homes in pounds and shelters nationwide are mixed breeds. They are dogs and even cats and other pets that are of mixed heritage as opposed to being purebred.
That is not to say that purebreds cannot be found in pounds and shelters also. There are breed rescues that are dedicated to specific breeds as well. But still, the majority of animals found in pounds and shelters are mixed breeds.
How can you participate?
If you wish to adopt a mutt, a good place to start is Petfinder.com. Or simply visit your local shelter or rescue.
Of course, before you adopt, be certain you are able to properly care for your new pet. Adopting a pet is a big responsibility, both financially and physically. Be sure you can meet that challenge before you bring home a pet.
If you are not in a position to adopt a pet, you can still help by making a donation to your local shelter or rescue organization. Or you can volunteer your time.
