It is hard to believe that Dec. 18 is National Roast Suckling Pig Day when it is so close to the Christmas holiday when people are having so many other foods to eat. However, according to a website that charts days to celebrate, Dec. 18 has been designated as National Roast Suckling Pig Day.

What is a roast suckling pig?

A roast suckling pig is a young piglet that has not yet been weaned from its mother. It is slaughtered between the ages of two and six weeks. It is traditionally cooked whole, often roasted, in various cuisines. It is usually prepared for special occasions and gatherings.

Young piglets are considered a delicacy because their meat is very tender compared to older pigs. A suckling pig can range anywhere from 9 to 20 pounds. That should be enough to feed a whole group of people.

It typically takes two days to fully prepare the pig and then to roast it. Nevertheless, roast suckling pigs are an iconic holiday dish, often depicted as the centerpiece of a massive feast.

There are various recipes for suckling pig. Today, pig roasts are a popular tradition in cultures all around the world. You usually see roast suckling pigs at family reunions during the summer; however, roast suckling pigs can be prepared and served at any large gathering.
