Synopsis:
Paying tribute to the action film favorites of the 1980s and early 1990s, Sylvester Stallone directed and co-wrote The Expendables with David Callaham. The explosive testosterone-filled film centers around a group of elite mercenaries hired to overthrow a Latin American dictator. The ensemble cast includes the action veterans Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Jet Li. Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger make cameo appearances. Other action stars include Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Gary Daniels, Randy Couture and Steve Austin.
The Expendables are a team of highly skilled mercenaries consisting of the leader Barney Ross, former SAS soldier and knife specialist Lee Christmas, weapons specialist Hale Caesar, martial artist Yin Yang, sniper Gunner Jensen and demolitions expert Toll Road. Initially, they are deployed to the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia, to stop the local pirates from killing hostages aboard a naval ship. While fighting the pirates, Jensen and Yang get into a heated dispute, resulting in Jensen's dismissal from the team.
Upon completing the mission, the Expendables head back to New Orleans. There Ross and a rival mercenary leader Trent Mauser are summoned to a clandestine meeting at a church with a mysterious man known as "Mr. Church." He wants to commission the mercenaries to overthrow and assassinate the vicious dictator General Garza of Vilena, a small South American island located between the Gulf of Mexico and South America. Mauser declines and Ross takes the job.
Ross and Christmas head to Vilena to meet their contact Sandra, the local rebel who turns out to be Garza's daughter. After accessing the situation, they learn that Garza is supported by ex-CIA agent James Munroe and his henchmen Paine and The Brit. Ross decides to abort the mission after discovering the real conflict that is consuming the city. They escape leaving behind many casualties, but Sandra refuses to leave Vilena to go with them back to New Orleans. Things get even worse when Jensen joins Garza and Munroe to exact revenge against the Expendables.
After deducing the real target of the mission and Mr. Church's affiliations, Ross seeks out the mission coordinator and former teammate Tool for advice. Urged to rescue Sandra to save Ross' soul from endless guilt, he is determined to go back to Vilena alone on a suicide rescue mission. However, his band of brothers are ready to come to his aid and together the Expendables will stand together and fight to the end.
