NBC affiliate WAND (Channel 17) reported on Friday, November 22, 2013, the Decatur Public Library Board voted a new budget that includes a $166,000 surplus. The Decatur Public Library downstate in Decatur, the county seat of Macon County, in Central Illinois will spend $3,200,000.
However, to end a half-a-million-dollar budget gap, the Decatur Public Library Board had to make drastic cuts. Ten staff members will lose their jobs and the Baby Talk program has lost funding.

The Woodridge Public Library (WPL) in west suburban Woodridge, Illinois has added two self-checkout machines. Susan McNeil-Marshall, Library Administrator of the WPL, announced on Monday, December 2, 2013, “It's finally here! Patrons have been asking when we were going to get self-checkout, and the time is now! We have two units--one in the lobby and one in the Children's Department. These units are meant to save time checking out for those in a hurry and there is a line at the desk. You can use these units to borrow materials, see what is currently checked out on your account, pay fees with a credit or debit card, renew items, and view your holds. Blu-ray discs and console games are now housed in the self-checkout towers in the lobby. Self-checkout is easy to use, and instructions are provided in English, Spanish, Lithuanian, and Arabic. As always, staff is available to assist. And, by the way, based on some early patron comments, self-checkout is not going to replace staff.”
Illinois is offering a Soon to be Famous Author program so that an author who has self-published an adult fiction title can submit it to the WPL, in digital or print versions, and, in turn, the WPL might be able to nominate it for consideration. The deadline for submitting a book to the WPL is Monday, December 16, 2013.
