Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day, taking place on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, is the brainchild of author Jenny Milchman. In 2011, the second year for the worldwide event, more than 150 bookstores are taking part.
Participants include Bookbug in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Open Books in Chicago and 4 Kids Books and Toys in Zionsville, IN.
Even closer to South Bend, you might consider visiting one of our local bookstores with a child. In addition to the Grape Road Barnes and Noble, Better World Books and Erasmus Books both stock children's selections.
Milchman has written, ""Bookstores hold a place in the hearts and times of our community. They are places to discover an author, a story, a life. Nothing affords the conversation and interaction among books and book lovers that a bookstore does."
Shortly after Milchman wrote about the idea on her blog, it began to go viral. Publisher's Weekly has written about the event, along with numerous literary blogs. The rapid take-off of this event may remind some of All Hallow's Read, the campaign to give books in addition to candy for Halloween, started by Neil Gaiman in an October 2010 blog post.
See you at the bookstore, with your children, on Saturday!
