In 2004, Debbie Stoller brought knitting to a whole new generation with Stitch 'n Bitch, a handbook for knitter's which tackled the basic skills. Since then, she has guided us through crocheting, knitting for guys, and keeping a knitter's journal. Now, she's taking it to the next level.
Stitch 'n Bitch Superstar Knitting: Go Beyond the Basics came out at the beginning of the month and includes instructions on all the extras of knitting that take your craft from starter to superstar. Advanced knitting techniques include I-cords, cables, crocheted embellishments, stripes and color forms.
There's even a section dedicated to Do-It-Yourself knitting, i.e. creating your own patterns. Because once you have mastered the techniques, it's easy to alter patterns to include a curly-cue edging, or to create something entirely from your own imagination. Of course, you're not responsible for all of the patterns, there are 41 of Stoller's own included in the book, which utilize the featured techniques and make super-cool Christmas gifts even for your friends and family members who don't know they want a hand-knit.
Whether you buy it yourself to knit some holiday treats, or give the book to your favorite knitter to further their skills this season, Stoller is the icon of simple lessons in funky fiber crafting. You can find the book in the crafting section of most Austin-area bookstores and knitting stores like Hill Country Weavers, or you can order it online. Stoller is currently touring around the country to promote her latest book, but Austin isn't on the agenda. E-mail her to request a stop in our weird city.
