Debbie Ford dies: Self-help author dies at age 57 in her San Diego home

Debbie Ford died on Sunday in her San Diego home at the age of 57 after a long battle with cancer. Debbie Ford is the bestselling author of the self-help book “The Dark Side of the Light Chasers” and eight other books. She also led workshops and hosted TV and radio shows that provided in-depth discussions about her work. Debbie Ford’s goal was to help her readers to overcome their dark side and to provide exercises to aim for the lighter side in life.

According to a Feb. 19, 2013, Mail Online report, Debbie Ford’s sister Arielle said in a statement that “the author wanted to help people break free from their emotional baggage and fear.”

Besides her sister Arielle, Debbie Ford is survived by her mother, son, and brother.

Unlike some authors, Debbie Ford’s inspiration for her books did not come from theoretical ideas but from her own personal experiences of dealing with drug addiction, divorce and other personal struggles .

Debbie Ford’s book “The Dark Side of the Light Chasers” propelled the author’s career into the spotlight when it became a New York Time bestseller in 1998.

Debbie Ford believed that each individual shares some characteristic of what can be called the human experience. While we are born with the ability to express all of those emotions and human characteristics when we are born, often that ability vanishes as we grow older. The human experience consists as much of dark sides as it does of light sides.

Unfortunately, humans tend to deny their dark sides instead of confront them leading to suffering, frustration, and anger.

Rather than denying the dark side and ignoring hidden emotions, recognizing them and “chasing” them might in fact lead each individual to a much needed light in an otherwise dark world. “The very impulses we most fear may be the key to what is lacking in our lives.”

While Debbie Ford will be deeply missed by her family, readers, and fans, her work will continue to live on.
