Wrestlers dying at young ages has been a tragic reality that's plagued the industry for many decades now. It's brought untold sadness to the profession and those who participate in it. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays from using these tragedies in his political campaign to defeat his opponent Linda McMahon, wife of WWE CEO Vince McMahon. According to a Wednesday January 11th report by CTPost.com, Shays made the following comments about Linda McMahon and pro-wrestling:
"Let's think about it: She's got over 41 people 50 years and younger who've died in her jobs. That's quite a job record that she's created. They're not off limits. There is nothing about McMahon that intimidates me because I think you can't buy an election. I know you can't buy an election."
Shays joins a long list of political opposition, and WWE critics, to blame the WWE for cultivating an environment that led to the deaths of so many wrestlers. Reportedly, 5 former WWE wrestlers had died during Linda's 14 month senate campaign in 2010.
Linda's attempt to win her political race has led to untold public scrutiny for the WWE and pro-wrestling as a whole, despite how much she tries to distance herself from the company. However, I find it extremely offensive and ignorant of Shays to use the deaths of pro-wrestlers as part of his political campaign.
