Tuesday, the death toll from Pakistan flooding reached over 1,500 people in the northwestern province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; relief workers have had difficult time reaching flood victims because many roads have been washed out.
The devastating floods ripped through Pakistan Saturday after monsoon rains, and many people were carried away when the floodwater swept away their mud houses in Swat Valley, and in the districts of Shangla and Tank. The monsoon rains are expected to continue over the next few days, mudslides in the area have also been triggered from the heavy rain.
This is the worst disaster to hit Pakistan in over 80 years, and the rainfall has broken all records. Officials said that they are preparing for an outbreak of disease that will affect millions of residents.
Monday, government officials said that a major concern is over a lack of clean drinking water for residents, and that it is spreading conditions like cholera and gastroenteritis.
"We estimate that about 100,000 people, mostly children, have been hit by cholera and gastro diseases," said Syed Zahir Ali Shah, health minister for Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa.
The United Nations has asked for help with providing emergency shelter, food, drinking water, and sanitation facilities in Pakistan.
Monday, US Air Force cargo planes landed in Pakistan with food packages. The US has pledged $10 million in emergency aid.
