On Sunday, a British-born Swedish princess reunited with her prince after hiding their affair for decades. Princess Lilian died peacefully on March 10 at the age of 97 in her hometown of Stockholm, according to a report from Reuters.
Princess Lilian and Prince Bertil met and fell in love during World War II when she was just a commoner.
The saga began in 1947 when Prince Bertil's elder brother and heir to the throne died in a plane crash. The next brother in line waived his right to the throne when he married a commoner. Prince Bertil became next in line until his nephew from the deceased brother came of age (Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden). The nephew was a mere infant at the time.
To avoid the problems associated with marrying outside of royalty, Prince Bertil and Princess Lilian kept their love life secret for over 30 years.
It was three years after the nephew became king (1973) that Prince Bertil and Princess Lilian were married, with the approval of the nephew.
Prince Beril died in 1997.
