Brutal death metal with the exotic twists of Egyptian lore is headed into upstate NY this week with the arrival of the metal onslaught of Nile. The band hits Albany, NY tonight with a show at Bogies and then they converge on Rochester, NY at Montage Music Hall on Thursday 4/18. The band will also be landing at The New England Metal & Hardcore Festival among other dates as seen below.
These guys do it like no others and have been able to maintain their fresh attack while increasing the musicianship along the way. 2012 saw the release of “At The Gate Of Sethu” that is nothing short of brutal perfection. The good news is the band is out on tour, the bigger news is they took a break from writing their new album to do this tour. So fans of the wrath that is Nile, be forewarned, they have more on the way. The band is also re-releasing and is available for digital download now; In The Beginning.
Anyone that has seen or listened to an interview with guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders is aware of just how intelligent this man is. He is also witty, sharp, and is a treasure trove of experience and knowledge; simply a pleasure to speak with.
So get yourselves ready Albany, Rochester, and points beyond; Nile is coming and may have the wrath of Ra with them.

Interview with Karl Sanders
(Edited for time and space)
Nile has been around a long time, let’s look back first, maybe give an overview of the bands beginnings and through the years?
Karl – Oh wow, well, last year we celebrated 20 years, we started in ’93. Like a lot of local bands we struggled and played our butts off anywhere we could. We put out our own CD, managed to sell enough of them to get some labels attentions, and ended up on Relapse Records. That led to a series of tours with Morbid Angel and yeah, here we are!
The bands name and songs are based on Egyptian history and lore, can you talk about how you came to be so into that and how hard was it incorporating it all into the music?
Karl – It was just an interest of mine, one day I woke up in a band named Nile. That kind of led to researching it for the lyrics and the interest sort of grew from there. The more I researched it the more vested I became.
I checked out an interview you did with Metalship Webzine a year ago and you had some very insightful thoughts and opinions about the internet; and how it has affected bands, fans, and musicianship; can you talk a bit about your thoughts on those topics?
Karl – Certainly, the internet has changed the entire music business. For those of us that were around before the age of the internet it’s a completely different world. None of the old rules apply anymore, it’s change and adapt or die. A lot of people have to change their way of thinking or the way to make a dollar to make a living and keep going. There are no more CD sales, there are some, and it’s getting harder to make a living on tour with the rising cost of touring. Everything goes up except the amount of money that we get paid.
Your album “At The Gate Of Sethu” is an insane work of art man, can you talk about the album and how is it different or the same as previous records?
Karl – It’s a Nile record, it’s brutal death metal and has exotic elements and deals with lyrics derived from ancient Egyptian histories, mythologies and so forth. That parts the same, the approach we had on that record is it’s a very surgically clean record, a precise capture of the musicianship. I think that is really where the focus was, we wanted to capture as cleanly as possible what we were actually playing and present in that simple kind of light to people. Simple, honest, this is how we play. No fancy production, this is how we play.
I am floored every time I hear another song and solo, when did you start playing guitar?
Karl – I started playing when I was 9 and I’m 50 now so I have 41 years into it.
Yeah, I started around 11-12 and I'm 47.
Karl - Yeah man! We are from the same generation!
You are headed into New York this week with shows in Albany and in Rochester, what can fans expect at the shows?
Karl – We’re going to play some Nile songs and play our asses off! We are also bringing some songs that we have never played and songs we haven’t played in a decade or so, so we are having a lot of fun with the set list.
In between those two, you guys are at New England Metal And Hardcore Fest, killer, can you talk about that one? Have you played it before and how stoked are you for that?
Karl – We’ve played it several times over the last 20 years. It’s always a blast, we are good friends with the promoter Scott Lee. The Worcester bands are so awesome, it’s one of our favorite places to go in America because the bands are so killer in that area.

When will we get another album from you guys?
Karl – Actually we are writing songs for the next record, we took a break to do this tour. We have a new record in the works and we are excited for it, yeah! It’s what we live for!
I know the fans are stoked for the shows, what would you like to say to the fans and readers out there?
Karl – Man, we love our fans! Metal fans and Nile fans in particular are the reason why we go out on tour. I can’t wait to play our songs and meet some new friends and see some old friends on tour!
