‘Death by asteroid more likely than death by GMO food’ says former activist

On Jan. 7, Bloomberg news reported former anti-GMO food activist has made a stunning turnaround. Mark Lynas, once one of the most outspoken critics of the GMO movement in both the UK and around the world now believes genetically modified food is safe.

After apologizing for his part in ‘ripping up GM crops’ during his time as an environmental and food activist, Lynas claimed that he longer supports the anti-GMO claims.

“You are more likely to get hit by an asteroid than to get hurt by GM food,” he said.

The man who once famously threw a pie in the face of famed economist Bjorn Lomborg when he disagreed with his environmental views, now appears to be focusing his attack on the anti-GMO movement and the poor science in which he feels the views are based. Not surprisingly, many of the most adamant in the movement have fought back, countering Lynas claims with their own, pro-GMO stances.

The most over the top response, however, came from Dr. Vandana Shiva, who shortly after hearing Lynas statement tweeted, “Mark Lynas saying farmers sh[oul]d be free to grow GMOs which can contaminate organic farms is like saying rapists sh[oul]d have freedom to rape.”

Responding to the accusation, Lynas tweeted back, “Comparing me with rapists is disgusting and offensive. You are a reactionary fraud and an enemy of the poor.”
