Bodybuilding has its ups and many, many, many downs. There is the glory of looking like Adonis for 90 seconds on stage, while there can be 12 weeks or more of restrictive dieting, over training, body dysmorphic disorder and even death. Death, the ultimate tragedy, does occur in this “healthy and fit” sport, and arrived at the NPC Excalibur in Culver City, CA this weekend.
There was little news about the rumored death of a male bodybuilding competitor except for a few statements made in bodybuilding forums. Since Saturday, the rumors were found true that Masters competitor Steve Kapper died at the NPC Excalibur Championships. It was reported this occured after he collapsed backstage during prejudging. The cause of death is still unknown.
Kapper was a seasoned bodybuilder and participated in the NPC Excalibur in 2007 and 2006, as well as the NPC California State Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships in 2004.
