This weekend, a diverse slate of more than 50 comics will be offered for the 13th Annual Free Comic Book Day Celebration at Green Brain Comics, 13210 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.

Those coming into the store between 10 a.m.-8 p.m. can choose up to five comics for every age, taste and reading level. Like every year on the first Saturday in May, Green Brain will again offer special twists in how people can get an extra free comic: show up in costume, bring a used cell phone to donate to Cell Phones for Soldiers, and/or bring a canned food item to donate to Gleaners Community Food Bank.

Several local comic creators will be exhibiting under a tent in the parking lot during the event, including special guest Jay Fosgitt. Fosgitt created a special custom cover for his National Cartoonist Society nominated comic book, exclusive to Free Comic Book Day at Green Brain. Bodie Troll is an all-ages comic drawn by Fosgitt “in cartoony style,” according to Green Brain.

“Oh yeah, we always get a good turnout for Free Comic Book Day,” Green Brain co-owner Kate Merritt said. “In the last couple years, we've had 1,200 hundred people come through in the course of the day.

“Where the creators will be set up, we hope it's not too windy, and we hope any rain clears up by the time festivities start, because it looks the weather will be 60 degrees on Saturday,” she said.

There will also be a special appearance and proclamation by Dearborn Mayor John B. O'Reilly Jr. Alter Ego Management will provide live solo musical performers in the evening: a cellist, a saxophonist and an electronic clarinet. Underground Resistance will provide live DJ sets throughout the day, which Merritt said would provide some electronic music, remixed songs and comic-book themes, “Up tempo music to keep people moving on through, make the day fun.”

If anyone actually purchases comics that day, a portion of each sale will benefit Friends of the Dearborn Animal Shelter, which will have volunteers there that day with an adoptable animal.

Free Comic Book Day 2014 is sponsored by Oakwood Healthcare Systems and the East Dearborn Downtown Development Authority. For more information, call (313) 582-9444 or check out the website or on Facebook at
