Dearborn Heights vets observe Memorial Day in annual mass at St. Hedwig Cemetery

Several Dearborn Heights veteran groups will be commemorating Memorial Day in the annual mass at St. Hedwig Cemetery.

Col. Ron Faulk of the USA Army will be the guest speaker at the 10 a.m. event, which will be emceed by Ron Simpson. Wreaths will then be presented by the Pvt. John Lyskawa-Tutro Post 7546, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States; American Legion Post Carl E. Stitt Post 232; and Polish Legion of American Veterans Post 16. Capt. Paul Gazdik will then lead the Dearborn Heights veterans' joint honor guard in a gun salute and taps.

“Those are the three posts which are there every year, and any other group in this area is invited to attend,” said Simpson, who is the outgoing commander of the Lyskawa VFW Post. “Some years, the Donovan Post will join in.”

Afterward, Simpson said, an open house will be held in the VFW Hall at 6828 Waverly (across from the cemetery), serving hot dogs and beverages.

The wreaths laid at the cemetery will be presented by Post Cmdr.-elect Robert Lucy and Trustee Robert Lee for the Lyskawa VFW, President Mike Spurgis and Vice-President Vincent Spurgis for the Lyskawa VFW Men's Auxiliary, by President-elect Leah Lucy and Jr. Vice-President Shirley Lee for the Lyskawa Women's Auxiliary, by Cmdr.-elect Cass Wegzyn and Outgoing Cmdr. Ed Kempisty for the Stitt American Legion, by President Kim Frazier and First Vice-President Marion Wagner for the Stitt Ladies Auxiliary, Cmdr. William Barnes and Sr. Vice-Cmdr. Jamie Frazier for Stitt's Sons of the American Legion, and Cmdr. John Cortez and Adjutant Jerry McFee for PLAV 16.
