Rule 32(b) makes it very explicit: makeup artists and hair stylists are support staff; they do not act as producers or direct the activities of others.
DeAnna Padilla didn’t get the memo. Which is why on January 23, Artifice in Las Vegas was jammed with members of the local arts and fashion communities, there to watch a fashion show by three local designers and contribute to charity. Enough with “the rules”, DeAnna was clearly in charge, and those around her were loving it.
DeAnna describes the fashion and beauty industry as “the family business”, something she grew up in and that gave her confidence in her abilities not only as an artist, but as a visionary who could create opportunities for other artists. In her own work she is known for pushing boundaries and adding an edge to classic styles. She decided to extend that vision in creating Fashion Clash, which is intended to give new artists a chance to work with more seasoned professionals, joining the points of view of makeup artists, hair stylists and fashion designers and, as an added benefit, producing money for charities.
The show opened with clothes by Justin Yu of Vegas Royalty, a designer who has stores in two of the casinos on the Strip. His shops have become quite popular, both with tourists and members of the local “alternative” community. It’s hard to characterize the designs; perhaps “urban glam” with a decidedly Las Vegas edge catches the flavor of it.
The second designer to show was Bunker Hill Bradley who, after a distinguished international career as an automotive designer, decided to use his design esthetic and technology skills to create beautiful, comfortable and colorful clothing for women. He uses custom fabrics and proprietary printing techniques to produce his “second skin” dresses for Cobra Culture.
The show that closed the evening was by Lenka Fucikova, a short film producer who makes most of the costumes for her films. Her clothes follow her nature and tell a story; and the story of the women who wear her designs is extravagant, sexy and romantic. Lenka grew up in the Czech Republic, but left it to explore the world. She ended up in Las Vegas, studied design at the Art Institute and film, dance and theater at UNLV. She is, ultimately, an artist whose visions are expressed in multiple overlapping media.
MC Steph MacKenzie hosted the show, to a raucus response from the audience. Over a thousand dollars was raised for the two charities: The Caring Place and the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. DeAnna assures us that this event is just the first of many.
