Deals aplenty at the Vogue Knitting LIVE Marketplace (Photos)

"My husband says we always choose the coldest weekend to come to New York."

Leslie Fischgrund of Gloucester, Virginia was participating in a "yarn tasting" with Zealana Yarns; this chance for knitters to try out a select few yarns for free before they purchase is one of several perks available to shoppers at the Vogue Knitting LIVE Marketplace at the Marriott New York Marquis this weekend. Yarn companies participating in the Yarn Tasting include Rowan, Zealana, Skacel, and others, along with needles being provided by Knitter's Pride.

At the Vogue Knitting LIVE booth itself, shoppers can purchase any book and receive a copy of Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Sock Book absolutely free (retail value $29.95). Shoppers can also subscribe to Vogue Knitting for $21 for the first year, and the subscription includes a free gift.

Knitty City is holding book signings throughout the weekend, with the featured author on hand for one or two hours of talking about the book, meet-and-greet, and a personalized autograph in every purchased copy. Saturday's featured authors are Betsy Perry, Leslie Ann Bestor, Mary Beth Temple, Katharine Cobey, Norah Gaughan, Bruce Weinstein, and Vedis Jonsdottir. Knitty City is also participating in the event-wide raffle. Their raffle prize is a $50 gift card, with all registrants to Vogue Knitting LIVE eligible to win.

The raffle is a part of several booths at the Marketplace, encouraging shoppers to check the wipe-off boards for their names every hour as they shop. Other prizes include a Soak Wash gift set from Soak Wash, a ball of luxury yarn and pattern for a Geo Cowl from Windy Valley Musk Ox, and a skein of 100% wool yarn from Bartlettyarns.

Fashion shows feature prominently throughout the two days in the Marketplace also. Unlike Chicago, the fashion shows, held every one to two hours, are located in the middle of the Marketplace instead of in a separate room. If passersby were just browsing yarn, notions, bags, and tools for purchase, they may also catch a glimpse of a knitting piece from Nicky Epstein's publication Knitting in Circles appearing on a model walking down the runway.

Just outside the Marketplace, author and designer Vickie Howell is instructing new knitters in the Beginner's Lounge and handing out free balls of Bernat yarn to any and all attendees to the event. Inside the Marketplace, many vendors are offering their wares at a special Vogue LIVE discount price, or certain lines being offered on sale below normal retail.

Most deals in the Marketplace are while supplies last, as vendors have traveled with limited stock. Attendees who do not have a Marketplace ticket can purchase one outside the Marketplace on the 6th floor of the Marriott New York Marquis.
