Columbus is in the height of the winter cold and flu season. For those who have year round allergies, dealing with a cold or the flu on top of their usual nasal allergy problems can be a trying process.
Here are some tips to help you get through a winter cold when you also have nasal allergies:
- Apply a moisturizer to your nose and lips to avoid the chapped and irritated skin that results from frequent nose blowing and the cold, raw outdoor air.
- Use a nasal rinse to reduce inflammation in your nasal passages. However, if using a neti pot, take care to use boiled, distilled water due to the risk of infection from parasites present in some water supplies.
- Add humidity to your home's air, but take care to avoid excess humidity that leads to mold growth. Mold can worsen your allergies.
- Try the old home remedies including hot tea with honey and lemon, chicken soup and cayenne pepper to open your sinuses and soothe your throat.
Spend some time outdoors. Even a short 15 minute walk through one of the Metro Parks can help clear your sinuses.
