Dealing with a mother-in-law from a different culture (while living in the same house)

Living in East Los Angeles is not so bad, if you are used to the culture. But, what about a white girl, stay-at-home- mom, living with a Hispanic mother-in-law?  Or any combination of different cultures? Neither speak the others' language. How can it be that the two could survive living in the same house?

It just happens that way. With the poor economy, many have been forced to move in with family members. They may get along just fine. Or, they may fight like boxers in the fighting ring.

It certainly doesn't help when two parties in the same household come from completely different backgrounds, and cultures. However, the situation can work well if you learn to accept certain differences instead of counting them as flaws.

Make an agreement to learn new words from each other's language. That way communication will gradually become easier. Ask for help from you husband, or get a dictionary. When you aren't sure what the other person is telling you, don't pretend that you understand. That can lead to many undesirable outcomes.

When it comes to your mother-in-law and the kids, it's important to stand your ground on principal issues. Many Cultures push young parents into making decisions that their parents or in-laws want. Make it clear what you will tolerate, and what you absolutely will not budge on.

Be willing to listen if she has a genuine concern. Be respectful, but firm. Always be loving. Finally, if you find that your mother-in-law just won't leave you alone, leave the house for a while until you can be calm and more rational.

Nothing is worse than being at war with your mother-in-law when you live in the same house.
