Deaf man stabbed after sign language was confused for gang signs

Terrance Ervin Daniels, a North Carolina deaf man, was stabbed Wednesday night when another man mistook his sign language for gang signs. Police say Daniels was signing with another deaf man when a passerby, 22-year-old Robert Jarell Neal, thought he was “flashing gang signs”. Neal reportedly stabbed Daniels several times with a kitchen knife. Witnesses say they saw Daniels trying to defend himself.

Officers responded to a call shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday night and responders found the 45-year-old victim, Daniels, in the grass suffering from multiple stab wounds. Several people who live nearby admitted they saw the attack. “My voice is gone from me screaming, ‘Stop, stop, leave that man alone,” Candace Gerrington said Thursday. She claimed Daniels was trying to defend himself, “Throwing his hands up like this. Next thing I saw was somebody stabbing and grinding him,” she said through tears.

Neal is being held under a $500,000 secured bond and has been charged with a felony assault on a handicapped person and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflecting serious injury. Neal has a criminal past that includes numerous assaults on women.
