There must be such desperation for a person to stuff an innocent living being in a box and dump them on a doorstep. This happened within the past few hours in Wood River, Illinois.
A two to three-year old deaf cat was stuffed into a sealed box that bore the words, “I need help, I’m deaf,” and abandoned on the doorstep of a resale shop. Perhaps the person that did this desperate act was in the know that Nancie’s Fancies just happened to be supporters of the Riverbend Humane Society.
Riverbend is a no-kill shelter, so perhaps the despairing pet owners thought that the special needs female would be safe. The only issue is that this shelter is also desperate. They have only one caregiver for 50 cats – now 51 – to care for.
Right now the green eyed, white cat is safe and sound but very confused. It is difficult for an animal with all of its faculties, but for a deaf cat, it must be downright horrific.
Sarah Taylor, the “Cat Lady,” is only 27-years-old. She loves all of the felines at the shelter and will do whatever is possible to take care of them. The only issue is that Riverbend Humane Society has Taylor, a manager, and a three-person staff. They are full to capacity and cannot take on any more animals. They would never want to refuse, but they just cannot take care of them correctly and be fair to the animals at the same time.
It takes money and resources to run an animal shelter. Although this small shelter has a board of directors, they have limited funding to help the animals. If too many more felines are dumped in this sort of way, the shelter will be forced by the state to shut down. In addition to the felines, the shelter also has more than 20 larger breed canines which are harder to adopt out than smaller breed canines, so they may be there awhile.
Potential adopters are completely scrutinized by no-kill shelters so as to ensure that the animals go to a safe and ‘forever’ home. They do not want to get the animals back. It’s hard on the animals and expensive for the shelters as they tend to run on a shoe-string budget and spend more than they ever get in return.
So, for those individuals that are in desperate situations, please realize that it is never all right to abandon innocent animals or children. There are other ways around your disparity. Please check with organizations in your area to find out the proper methods of help before you make a decision that you may regret for your entire lifetime!
