Everyone's favorite Marvel madman Deadpool has been rumored to have a starring role in his own movie for a while now. There's a script, director (Tim Miller), and star (Ryan Reynolds) all in place. It's just a matter of 20th Century Fox and whether they're willing to pull the trigger or not.
Fans have so far been compensated with the upcoming High Moon Studios video game that's slated for a summer release. Recent word has recently come from the developer that Fox is actually eyeing how well the game sells before committing to a film.
The main reason Fox hasn't gone ahead with a Deadpool movie yet seems to be because of the potential R rating that will come with it. The hesitation stems from the steep droppings of box office numbers by Watchmen which was another adult-themed superhero film. Despite the numbers after release, Watchmen earned $55 million on its opening weekend which lead to it becoming the seventh highest grossing March film ever.
A recent interview with Ryan Reynolds for the upcoming animated film The Croods seems to enforce this idea (starting at the 4:35 mark).
So it seems that unless Deadpool the video game makes enough bank to convince 20th Century Fox, then the "Merc with a Mouth" may have to stay silenced.
