Tonight, July 31, is the last night you can submit your Hugo 2014 ballot. If you are a member of LonCon 3, whether attending or supporting, you are eligible to vote in what is arguably SF fandom's most prestigious popularity contest. Log in to cast your ballot here, using your name, membership ID and PIN as they appear in the email you'll have received from "hugoadmin" at "loncon3" dot org. While there are a daunting amount of choices to make here, remember that if you click any of the "Save All Changes" buttons on that page, you can leave the form and come back again to find all your previous selections reloaded. There is no official "Submit" button; whatever state your ballot form is in when the deadline of July 31, 11:59 p.m. PDT arrives will be the vote that you cast.

Tonight is also the last night to sign up for the Conquer the Craft in 29 Days challenge (CTC29) at DIY MFA, because the challenge begins August 1!

DIY MFA is Gabriela Pereira's writer coaching site, engineered to help you "create a do-it-yourself version of the MFA" by writing with focus, reading with purpose, and building your community. Her site is full of free tools for embarking on the DIY MFA project. There's the Writer Igniter writing-prompt generator that gives you a randomly selected character, situation, prop and setting to get you started on a brand-new story or maybe the perfect scene to shake your mid-book blues loose. (It always starts withe taxi-driver/cryptic letter/lucky penny/rainy night prompt, at least in my experience; click "shuffle" to get a new prompt.) There are oodles of helpful articles by various authors. There's the DIY MFA Starter Kit, yours just by subscribing to Pereira's email list.

And there's Conquer the Craft, a prompt-a-day challenge running from August 1 through August 29. It's a little bit like National Novel Writing Month (and it's timed perfectly to build a foundation for your upcoming NaNoWriMo efforts), except with a dailiness focus rather than a word total goal. Says Pereira,

Conquer the Craft in 29 Days is not about hammering out a pile of pages in just one month. It’s about building a routine that you can sustain for the long haul and that will fit into your life. Remember: you don’t have to write anything perfect, and you don’t have to write a lot. You just have to write something.

Along the way, you’ll hone techniques that will transform the way you write your book, your memoir, or your poetry. At the end of the month, you’ll have a wealth of raw material, ready to be polished into that book you’ve always dreamed of writing.

It begins tomorrow--so sign up now!
