There have been hopes that the inspirational words of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay would help Tibetan Buddhists cope better with the tense situation in China. However, the shocking self-immolations by protesting Tibetan Buddhists have continued as Syracuse Buddhists now join together in sorrow over news that the dead body of one dead monk has been paraded through the streets in China.
Scott McDonald has reported for the Tibet Sun "Tibetan monk dies from self-immolation in Golog." A report today has said the body of a Tibetan monk who died after setting himself on fire has been paraded through the streets in northwestern China. The report came from Radio Free Asia which has said hundreds of angry Tibetans forced the Chinese police to hand over the remains of the 42-year-old monk, named Sopa, and then carried them through the streets in Dari county in Qinghai province.
Sopa is said to have drank kerosene before throwing it all over his body on Sunday. Radio Free Asia says a report claims Sopa’s “body exploded in pieces” before the police took it away. On Friday two other monks set themselves on fire. It has been reported at least 15 monks, nuns and former monks set themselves on fire in the past year in protest of repressive conditions under Chinese rule. It is now a time for mourning and prayers the situation in Tibet will improve.
