According to a report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the body of an illegal immimigrant was found Thursday morning on baseball star Chipper Jones’s family ranch in southwest Texas.
Jones has owned the 10,000-acre Double Dime Ranch, located 130 miles southwest of San Antonio, since 2000.
The 22-year old Mexican national's fly-blown corpse was discovered around 6:30 a.m. by a ranch foreman. Larry Jones Sr. called police, then left a message for his son on his voicemail.
Chipper Jones called his father later in the morning to get the grim details.
The local authoirites in Carrizo Springs, Texas, could not be reached for comment.
Deadspin.com ("Chipper Jones Death Ranch Claims Another Victim"), puts it bluntly: "It's eight miles from the border. It's 124 degrees. Do the math."
While foul play has yet to be officially ruled out, Chipper is not a suspect in the case, as he was with the Atlanta Braves on a road trip at the estimated time of death.
The Double Dime, named for the uniform numbers worn by father and son, is known as a "hunter's paradise."
The elder Jones said that Chipper visits the ranch several times a year during the offseason, as soon as the Braves are eliminated from playoff contention, and for Thanksgiving.
