It was around 12:40 p.m. on September 28 when beach walkers found the dead body of a horse on Hartlepool beach near the Brus Tunnel.
A Cleveland police spokeswoman said, “We got a call at around 12.40 pm on Saturday after somebody on the beach reported that they could see a dead horse.”
Within an hour, a man had contacted police to report a missing horse. He then confirmed that the dead horse was his animal.
When police accompanied Hartlepool Borough Council personnel to remove the carcass on Monday, they made the discovery that the body was not there.
A Hartlepool Borough Council spokesperson said, “We went to the site with specialist equipment to remove the horse on Monday morning, but it had gone.”
Police looked into the death of the horse after it was discovered late Saturday. The brown and white pinto horse had been at Oaksway Industrial Estate. They do not know how it got to the beach or even how it was killed or how it died.
Since the body of the horse had disappeared by Monday, not much more can be done to reach any conclusions or consider foul play.
The death of the horse remains a mystery.
