During a vehicle inspection on early Tuesday morning in Michigan, police officers were quite surprised when a supposedly dead deer jumped out of the trunk and took off running.
Two officers on routine patrol in Kalamazoo spotted a man sitting in his car at a Red Roof Inn at 2:30 a.m. The officers approached the man who told them he had struck a deer and was taking it home to prepare it as food.
According to WOOD-TV the unidentified man told Officer David Miller, " I hit a deer, I figured you would want to see it."
Lieutenant Stacey Geik of the Department of Public Safety explained, that Officer Miller "wanted to check on the tagging of the deer to make sure it was appropriately tagged with a kill permit or accident permit."
The dashboard video camera in the patrol car recorded the officers attempting to inspect the trunk. Miller can be seen slowly opening the trunk while the other officer stayed back. The deer then leaps from the trunk, fumbles to the ground, gets back up and takes off into the woods.
The man who thought he killed the deer was at a loss for words said the officers. It is likely the deer was just stunned from the impact and possible hit the car instead of the car hitting it.
"You just never know what you are going to encounter," said Lt. Geik. There could be worse things in trunks."
The officers have probably prepared themselves for the types of things that could happen while on duty, but this is one no one could have imagined. As for the man who thought he killed the deer, this could have ended up like the scene from the movie Tommy Boy.
