Dead birds, dead fish update: Experts accused of cover-up after mass animal deaths
The ongoing reports of dead birds and fish is continuing to make headlines in the UK and around the world.
On Sunday, a lengthy column in The Telegraph is titled: "Aflockalypse now: on a wing and a prayer. Were sinister wildlife deaths around the globe foretold in the Bible, asks Philip Sherwell - or just foul play?"
The author, Philip Sherwell, quoted Karen Rowe, a senior ornithologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. She said she doesn't take calls from the public any longer because she has been swamped with wacky theories of what is causing the bird deaths.
Rowe told The Telegraph that scientists have been accused of covering up the "real" cause of bird and fish deaths.
“I feel like the spoiler at the party when I explain that there is nothing there to justify a conspiracy theory," the scientist said. "They just got flushed from their roost, crashed into things and died. The only thing this has in common with dead fish in the Arkansas river or dead birds in Louisiana is that they have nothing in common.”
Magnetic pole shift, magnetic field change as the cause of the bird kills?
The Daily Mail story touches on a theory that has caused a lot of buzz on the Internet. That theory is that some of the bird kills could be the result of a shift in the magnetic field. The birds rely on magnetic fields for navigation. The north pole has been shifting by as much as 25 miles per year. Experts say further testing will need to be done to determine whether the shifting magnetic fields played any part in the animal deaths.
Should we be alarmed about the recent cases and are they connected?
The consensus among scientists is no and no.
In an article posted online Saturday in the Wall Street Journal's Web site Saturday, Paul Slota, spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey, which has been tracking mass animal deaths since the 1970s. told the paper that mass animal kills are not uncommon.
"In the last 10 years we have logged 188 cases just involving birds with mortality exceeding 1,000 animals per event," the USGS expert told the WSJ.

More evidence is surfacing that the reports of massive dead birds and fish that were found in Arkansas, Louisiana, Nashville, Tennessee and overseas in Sweden, Brazil, New Zealand and the UK are not unusual.
Thousands of dead crabs washed on shore in England but UK authorities say that cold weather is most likely to blame.
The USGS says mass animal kills happens regularly in nature and some of the deaths could also be related to toxins and loud noise produced by man. The mass bird deaths in Arkansas are thought to be the result of noise from New Years fireworks.

The Washington Post reported on Friday that the 2 million dead fish that were found in Maryland may be the result of unusually cool weather.
"It's colder than it's been in 25 years," Dawn Stoltzfus, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of the Environment told the Post. "That's terrible news for the (fish). In 1976, 15 million were killed during a cold snap"
The BBC is also debunking the conspiracy theories which blame the dead birds and fish on everything from BP to a sign from God. One biblical scholar, Harold Camping, has predicted the end of the world will be on May 21, 2011. That has caused more to suspect that the bird and fish kills could be a precursor to the apocalypse. Some have jokingly called it the "aflockalypse."
The BCC concludes, "But experts insist that what is going on is pretty common and that the incidents are unconnected."
Could we be hearing more about mass bird and fish kills because there is more reporting of the kills in the media?

I originally thought that the blackbirds here in the U.S died from the fish (Red winged blackbirds live near water. The fish get sick and die, bugs eat them, then birds eat the bugs and die).
But the ones in Italy are turtle doves, they eat seeds. Maybe it has to do with the dirt. Why isn't it killing cattle then? And why does it only affect them in the sky? Or are there dead birds in branches that no one is reporting them?

look at the numbers. If more than 1000 animals, birds, fish whatever die in one area it's going to make the news somewhere so I don't believe that "over-reporting" is an issue at all. I do believe that there are forces at work here that are above and beyond human intelligence and that it may not just be a "sign from God" . There is a lot out there in the universe that we can't explain and the universe is so endless and seemingly infinite that if there isn't anything else out there then it would just seem like an awful waste of space would it not? In the back of my mind I'm thinking that a presence has made its way to our planet and the technology used for travel or cloaking has caused an interruption with our natural world
this stoey caught my eye on jan. 2. then the next day more of the same. i really dont think some presence from some distant planit is to blame. sorry chris. i also dont believe that they died as a result of fireworks. theese kinds of birds flock together in many places and are startled often. what we now have are more than one species of birds rueling out bugs dirt or poisened watter. pollar shift maybe. this seems to be the most likely choice of scientists, but lots and lots of animals use the same maginetic field for migration and navagation. i am stumped and feel that it might be time to call my dad. he is a well published bird watcher and expert(we havnt talked for years). as far as the end of the world theroy, we will never know.

Authorities keep downplaying it. Fireworks, lightning, cold weather, not uncommon, internet. C'mon! this is the first time I heard of mass deaths all over the world since I started reading and watching the news! It started last year and I'm 44 yrs old!
nobody cares, but if it was 1000 people falling dead everyone would be concerned. its happening in 4 different places so something is wrong, but I think this all started from the oil spill but because they stopped calling it a disaster nobody thinks its still relevant fall the oil trail, u will see more dead things not just birds and fish .

No matter how you put it, it is nothing short of media blackout.
wildlife migratory or otherwise have highly sensitive magnetic receptors in their brains that detect the magnetic field.
normally the magnetic field shift only disorientates wildlife and at times causes strange flocking or migration.
but when the magnetic field shift to the extreme as it has and so suddenly this causes wildlife to become extremely disorientated and kills them.just like a caged Bird can be frightened to death by scarring it.
the fact is science is all best guess but these so called scientist have been told they are genies and they have been told that so many times they believe it.
most of these morons are just that,morons.
if you believe all the wildlife were just normal occurrence or believe the birds are dead from firework's or controlled poisoning you are dumber then the fools who are telling you the stories.
This was an interesting article. The best any of us can do is to make an informed judgement. I tend to agree that magnetic fields may play a part, that what is happening is a normal cycle of the planet. Take into account the weather shifts, volcanic and earthquake activity, solar flares and the fact that we will be aligned with the center of the universe soon and what is happening makes sense. I imagine things will escalate because we will be dealing with planetary magnetic pull as well which may add asteroid/meteor activity to the equation.
As for the fear factor, death is a part of life. Some meet it sooner than others. Being afraid of might happen only steals what joy we should be having in the here and now. I suggest we all live from day to day, taking what good we can from it, including being informed, and live our lives so we can feel complete when our time to die comes.
For my part, I believe there is more than our lives here on earth, so I view these events with interest and look forward to the next step.
