The Oregon Ducks may not have as many individual award winners in 2011 as they had in 2010, but newcomer De'Anthony Thomas made an immediate impact and, on Monday, was recognized by the Football Writers Association of America.
Thomas was named to the FWAA Freshman All-American team, joining Haloti Ngata, Max Unger, John Boyett, and LaMichael James as the only Oregon players to do so.
Thomas set the Oregon freshman record for most all-purpose yards in a single season this year, totaling 2,235 yards, which was also second all-time in Oregon history behind Jonathan Stewart. He also led the nation's freshman in touchdowns (18) and scored more points (110) than any non-kicker freshman in the country. He was also the only player in the NCAA with over 500 receiving yards, 500 rushing yards, and 500 kick return yards.
In addition, Thomas had three scoring plays of 90 yards or more, tying him with New Mexico State's Taveon Rogers for the most in the nation.
De'Anthony was one of five Pac-12 players named to the team, and he was one of just 14 true freshman.
