DC sniper to be executed tonight for murder of 10 in deadly shooting spree, part 1

John Allen Muhammad, 48, will be executed Tuesday night for the 2002 sniper attacks that left 10 people dead in areas of Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC. Muhammad and his teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo are also suspected of several other shooting deaths in Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, and Washington, according to the Associated Press.

Malvo is serving life without parole behind bars for his role in the crimes.

Muhammad was given a death sentence for the murder of Dean Harold Meyers that occurred at a gas station in northern Virginia.

The AP reports that prosecutors chose Virginia to try Muhammad and Malvo because of the “state’s willingness to execute killers.” Both Muhammad and Malvo were convicted of six murders in Maryland and received six life terms each.

The United States Supreme Court has barred the execution of juveniles as cruel and unusual, therefore the death penalty was ruled out for Malvo.

The shooting spree began with a plot to extort $10 million from the government that would allow Muhammad and Malvo to start a Canadian terrorist training camp for homeless youth. Muhammad’s ex-wife believes the real motive behind the rampage was a plan to kill her so he could regain custody of the couple’s three children.

The killing spree ended when authorities captured Muhammad and Malvo while they were sleeping in their car at a rest stop in Maryland. The car had been outfitted “so a shooter could hide in the trunk and fire through a hole in the body of the vehicle,” according to the AP.
