DC Farm to School Week 2011 Oct 3-7

The third annual DC Farm to School Week 2011 is planned for October 3-7.  Part of the USDA Farm to School initiatives, activities will promote local, seasonal food in school meals, along with farm experiences for DC area students.

The need for healthier foods in schools has been a national topic in recent months, and is a specific initiative of first lady Michelle Obama, part of her campaign against the national epidemic of childhood obesity.

For 2011, the  DC Farm to School Program has a new home, Alexandria’s Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture. Arcadia Center's mission is educational, promoting sustainable agriculture, with emphasis on access to healthy local food.

The non-profit Center should be a good fit for the DC Farm to School program, which was formerly managed by the Capital Area Food Bank.

In late July, the DC Farm to School Network and Arcadia sponsored a producer visit for DC school stakeholders. The group visited several large family farm operations on the Maryland-Delaware peninsula, in preparation for events to be planned for this year’s DC Farm to School Week. More information can be found at Arcadia’s blog
