When the CW announced they were working on a DC Comics television series that would take place in Gotham City and rotate around the police battling the world of crime before Batman existed, many assumed there would be no Batman in the show at all. According to Spoiler TV on Dec. 7, that is not true and the show is looking for someone to play a young Bruce Wayne.
The interesting part about “Gotham” is that the show will operate in a world without superheroes to save the day, although that is one of the complaints about the very good “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.” This will be set up more like a Film Noir with the police trying to fight a losing battle against crime and the city’s crime lords.
With “Mob City” on TNT now, there is already a show about that, but then again Showtime has had “Boardwalk Empire” on for a few years now. While both of those shows deal with real-life historical crime figures, what will help “Gotham” stand out will be the fictional crime lords of the DC Comics universe, including possibly the Falcone Family.
It will feature rookie homicide detective James Gordon who is investigating the deaths of Bruce Wayne’s parents Thomas and Martha Wayne, so this should take place a good decade before Wayne ever returns to Gotham City as Batman, and should deal with a lot of the time that Wayne is growing up under the care of Alfred.
“Gotham” starts filming in March 2014.
