DC Artists Competition at the Waters Edge Brings Major Names and Film Crew

The indie music scene in D.C., Maryland and northern Virginia-- fondly referred to by locals as the "DMV," is quite the musically creative medium and seems to be bursting at the seams with fresh, new talent. As major local acts are beginning to make names for themselves in mainstream media, the independent music scene is more alive than ever before.

Tuesday night, the Girls Night Out team was invited to an independent artists showcase and competition at the Waters Edge Restaurant in Woodbridge, VA. Judging the competition were June Balloon of Cash Money Records, the infamous DJ Alizay, and the DMV’s own R&B recording artist David Correy.

Traggic, our host for the evening and fellow independent artist, introduced over 15 acts. Judges evaluated the performances based on stage presence, individuality, crowd engagement and creativity. Dinero Baggs, third-place winner, impressed the judges with his creative branding and energy; Gangrene, second-place winners, won over the judges with their catchy lyrics and incredible stage presence; and Kove, the night’s first-prize winner, stole the show with his hit song, “Super Bowl Big.”

“The DMV is a sleeping giant of talent. …Many of these artists have the potential but don’t know the right people to make things happen. We’re trying to change that,” explained our host. Presented by Real Wit It Entertainment, this competition is a monthly event held in different cities along the East Coast.

Tuesday night’s event was filmed by television network TV One as part of a documentary on hip-hop featuring interviews with hip-hop/rap notables such as Drake and David Correy. The GNO team was able to catch up with David that night and he left us with some thoughtful insight to aspiring music artists, “Hard work beats talent that doesn’t want to work….[Talent] doesn’t mean anything if you don’t work hard for it.”
