Hydrogen peroxide is considered the world’s safest all-natural effective sanitizer. It is the only germicidal agent composed only of water and oxygen.

Peroxide kills microorganisms by oxidizing them, which is a controlled burning process. Perhaps that is what makes it a handy and inexpensive tool to keep around for medicinal purposes as well as those listed below which you may not have known about before. Some of these appeared in the March 10, 2014 issue of FIRSTfor women .

Pretreat stubborn stains – Pretreat stains on light-colored fabric by wetting the soiled spot with a 50-50 solution of hydrogen peroxide to water. Allow to sit for 30 minutes, then wash as usual. (Test on inconspicuous area first to check colorfastness.)

Whiten Clothes: an Alternative to Beach – Add a cup of hydrogen peroxide to white clothes as you launder them to whiten them. It is great to get rid of blood stains on clothes and carpets. If there is blood on clothing, just pour directly on the spot, let it sit for about a minute, then rub and rinse with cold water. Repeat, if necessary.

De-skunk Fluffy’s coat – If your pet gets sprayed by a skunk, mix 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap and ¼ cup of baking soda. Massage into his fur (being sure to avoid his eyes and ears); let sit for 5 minutes, then rinse with water. The peroxide will kill the odor-causing germs while the soap will cut through the germs as the baking soda deodorizes.

Cure a Foot Fungus – Spray a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water on them every night and let air dry.

Safely clean out ear wax – Instead of digging in your ears with cotton swabs, get a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide to use. Tilt your head to one side and use an eyedropper to apply a few drops of peroxide into the ear canal. Keep your head tilted for a few minutes to let the peroxide break down the wax, then tilt your head to the other side so the wax can drip out. Repeat with your other ear.

Infections – Soak any cuts or infections in 3% peroxide for 5 – 10 minutes several times a day. You can even put half a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus or other skin infections.

Perk up a fading houseplant – If the leaves of your favorite plant are showing signs of root rot (leaves turning yellow), water them regularly with a solution of 1 cup of water and 1 ounce of hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide releases oxygen into the soil to kill microbes and nourish the plants, which will perk them up in no time.

Hair Lightening – Peroxide is a bleaching agent which can be used to lighten hair. Dilute 3% hydrogen peroxide 50/50 with water and spray the solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. This will provide more natural highlights than the hair dye packages. It also lightens gradually so it is not a drastic change.

Get dingy grout gleaming – Spread a paste of 3 parts baking soda and 1 part hydrogen peroxide over the lines. Let sit for 15 minutes before scrubbing with a brush and rinsing.

Erase breakouts without irritation – To get rid of a blemish in a fast, gentle way: swab it once a day with 3% hydrogen peroxide. This will not cause the redness, dryness and irritation that benzoyl peroxide (the active ingredient in many over-the-counter acne products) can cause.

Make glassware sparkle – Add 2 ounces of 3% hydrogen peroxide to your dishwasher’s rinse compartment for crystal-clear glasses. The peroxide will also eliminate odor-causing bacteria and mold from your dishwasher, too.

Keep a humidifier germ-free – To prevent bacteria and mold from building up in your humidifier, try this: after every 3 days of use, unplug the device and remove the water tank. Saturate a clean cloth with 3% hydrogen peroxide and wipe down the base of the humidifier. Then fill the tank with 1 gallon of water and 1 pint of peroxide and let sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with fresh water.
