'DayZ' creator excited as new screenshots show stand-alone graphical improvement (Photos)

"DayZ" creator Dean Hall shared an update Friday on the progress of the stand-alone development of the hit "ArmA II" mod. While a release date still seems just out of reach, the progress looks substantial judging by the new batch of screenshots.

Hall and his team working on the "DayZ" stand-alone project have been working on a number of graphical improvements to the game engine to make the zombie-apocalypse world of Chenarus look even more believable. The lighting system has been improved and volumetric clouds were added to the sky for even more realism. Buildings are being redesigned as well with new textures that will make them look even more damaged and worn.

The developers have also added many new objects and areas into the world including wrecked cars, buses and airplanes. These are being placed into the world specifically to support new places for players to find loot to help them survive.

Character customization and weapon attachments are still being worked. Hall says that character customizations will start with choosing the race and gender of your character. As they progress in the game, they will be able to add tattoos, new clothing options and have to deal with their own scrapes and ailments. Meanwhile, "DayZ" will break weapons down to their major components which means players will not only have to take care of their weapon but individual magazines to be loaded into the weapon as well.

Hall still doesn't have a release date to share for "DayZ" yet as he explained they are going to take their time. However, it has entered internal closed testing and will expand once the new server architecture is nailed down.

"I feel fantastic about the situation, more than ever I feel like we’re doing something really interesting with this development," Hall wrote on the game's Tumblr blog. "Now is not the time to rush things, but we do need to ensure our pace is kept up."

"At no point in development, have I been as excited as I am right now. The risks we took with the direction have paid off. The engine and approach of the game is now entirely DayZ’s own, it is striking out into it’s own territory as a project. This is very exciting for all the team."
