John King Jr., surprise winner of the NASCAR Camping World Truck series opening race at Daytona International Speedway in 2012, will defend his title with Eddie Sharp Racing in Friday's Nextera Energy 250 driving the No. 33 ESR Chevrolet Silverado the team announced at Daytona Saturday.
King won last year’s Daytona race driving for Red Horse Racing. He was with the organization until they suspended operations of the team due to the lack of sponsorship after the May race at Charlotte. King made one other start in the Truck Series in 2012at Kentucky Speedway for Wauters Motorsports. He has been without a ride since then.
"I am very excited to join Eddie Sharp Racing, they have great equipment and more importantly a great team, which I believe are the keys to success in this sport,” King said. “We really wanted to defend my Daytona win from last year, so I am very excited to have the opportunity to drive such a great truck - I can't wait to get to Daytona.”
King is scheduled to run Daytona with support from the Eastern Coal Council, and possibly add more races if additional sponsorship comes together.
"Were working hard on it, so we'll see what happens beyond Daytona; nonetheless, I'm hopeful we can put it together to run all season with ESR." said King.
The Daytona Nextera 250 will air live on SPEED, Friday, February 22nd at 7:30pm.
