Daytona testing: JGR fast in the Gen-6 Toyota Camry

Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth all posted fast laps during the three-day Daytona Pre-Season Thunder test session at Daytona International Speedway, Thursday through Saturday, January 10th through 12th. This was the first time the new Gen-6 Sprint Cup cars, including the Toyota Camry, hit the track at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, which hosts the season-opening Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 24th.

On Thursday, Kenseth led the first practice session with a speed of 192.757 mph in the morning session. For the afternoon session, the three JGR teams led the way, with Hamlin leading the way (195.712 mph), followed by Kenseth (195.385 mph) and Busch (195.329 mph). Hamlin spent just one day at the test session, as his girlfriend Jordan Fish is due to give birth to the couple’s first daughter any day.

On Friday, Kenseth posted the third-fastest speed in the morning session (193.121 mph), while Busch posted the fastest JGR speed in afternoon session (198.957 mph – ninth-fastest).

Kenseth jumped back to the top of the chart Saturday morning with a speed of 194.062 mph, then dropped back to second-fastest in the final session Saturday afternoon (194.717 mph), followed closely by Busch in third (194.578 mph).
