Dayton man charged with physical and sexual assault of puppy

Ballard has been charged with animal cruelty. A DNA investigation continues.
Dayton Police Department

Kevin Ballard of Dayton, Ohio faces animal cruelty charges for the sexual and physical abuse of an eight-month-old puppy reported Friday's Dayton Daily News.

Dayton Police officers arrested Ballard, 55, on April 7 after an investigation leading to veterinarians at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center alleging Ballard sexually molested and beat a young, female pit pull mix named Sissy.

Authorities state Ballard brought Sissy to the rescue organization questioning whether the puppy had been spayed before he and his wife adopted the dog. Ballard told the vets the dog had been bleeding vaginally.

Veterinarians confirmed Sissy had indeed been spayed, and her rectal injuries were consistent with sexual abuse.

Ballard allegedly admitted to hitting Sissy in the head if she urinated in the house.

Sissy is now recovering, and is available for adoption through the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.

An investigation into what authorities are calling "horrific" continues.
