Dayton area college campuses will be closed on Monday, January 21 to observe the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. In recognition of this holiday, many campuses are holding special events to involve students in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of peace and community.
Sinclair Community College is holding a march and rally event. Activities will begin with keynote speaker, Ms. Mary Tyler, the executive director of the National Conference for Community & Justice (NCCJ). Then, students are invited to join in Dayton's MLK Day March & Rally. The march will begin at Peace Bridge and end at the Dayton Convention Center. Finally, students may participate in a rally at the Dayton Convention Center and engage in various workshops.
Wright State University also invites students to participate in special events to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- On Tuesday, January 22, Wright State University will hold its second annual MLK Unity March from 12:15 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- On Wednesday, January 23, the Wright State University Apollo Room will host the Soup or Bowl Hunger Awareness event from noon to 2 p.m.
- On Thursday, January 24, Minniejean Brown Trickey, a member of the "Little Rock Nine", will speak in the Apollo Room at noon. The Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Awards will take place in the Apollo Room from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
