Daytime Emmys Spotlight: 'Let's Make a Deal' nominee Mike Richards

It’s hard to believe that in the 50 plus year history of the show that “Let’s Make a Deal” has never received an Emmy before. That all changed at the 41 Annual Creative Arts ceremony when “Let’s Make a Deal,” originally hosted by Monty Hall and now Wayne Brady, won its first Daytime Emmy ever for music composition on Friday night. The show received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Song for “30, 000” Reasons to Love Me,” written by Brady and Cat Gray.

It seems fitting that the show would win an award for music. Host and Emmy nominee Wayne Brady is an accomplished performer having appeared on the stage in Las Vegas and in such productions as the national company of “Chicago, The Musical.”

Gray’s musical experience is impressive as well. A musician since the age of 12, Gray has toured or recorded with some of the biggest names in music including James Brown, Prince, Stevie Nicks and Earth, Wind & Fire.

On this version of “Deal,” the format hasn’t changed over the years. Players are picked at random from the studio audience and offered a chance to play against the house by using their guile, wit and instinct to win sensational prizes or risk losing it all by making one bad decision, receiving the world famous ZONK.

The show could win two more awards as it is also nominated for Outstanding Game Show and Outstanding Game Show host for Wayne Brady which will be presented at the Sunday ceremony.

Daytime TV Examiner caught up with the show’s executive producer Mike Richards to get his thoughts on the show’s nominations and to also get his thoughts on being double nominated in the same category. Richards also serves as executive producer for “The Price is Right” which is also nominated for Outstanding Game Show.
