Days of Our Lives” fans had better brace themselves for a big goodbye ahead. According to Soap Opera Digest on Friday, James Scott is leaving the show. While the character of EJ DiMera has been a prominent one for quite some time, that is about to change.

After playing the role of EJ for the past eight years, Scott has chosen to leave “Days of Our Lives.” It seems he is anxious to pursue some new opportunities and have a bit of downtime for himself. In a statement to SOD, Scott thanked his “unbelievably loving fans” and said he will miss them immensely.

It seems that James Scott finished taping for good on Friday, May 2. However, given the way the show is taped, EJ DiMera will remain on-screen until the fall. As many “DOOL” fans know, Alison Sweeney is also departing the show this year. She Knows Soaps speculates a bit about how the show may say goodbye to Sami and EJ.

It seems that Sweeney will wrap up filming her role at the end of May, and fans have been speculating for a while that the two characters may head out of Salem together. Though the couple has been through a lot of rocky times lately, given EJ's affair with Abby, it seems fans still have hope that there will be a happy ending for them.

While fans have known for some time that Alison Sweeney was leaving “Days of Our Lives,” many are caught off-guard and are quite dismayed over the news that James Scott is leaving as well. There has been no word of plans from the show to recast either character, which leads many to further speculate about the idea of the characters leaving together.

How will Sami and EJ leave Salem? Fans won't see an answer to that for a few months yet, but clearly the groundwork is being laid. It definitely will be a challenge for fans to say goodbye to two long-time characters like this at the same time. Tune in to “Days of Our Lives” airing weekdays on NBC to see just how Alison Sweeney and James Scott are written off the canvas.
