Daylight saving time 2013 is here, which means it’s time to put your clocks ahead one hour tonight before you go to bed. This is an archaic practice and while it had a purpose years ago, today its more than just annoying, experts say it can have dangerous side effects. “Fox and Friends Weekend” on Saturday, March 9, 2013, had all the anchors in agreement this morning that it’s time to do away with daylight saving time.
The “Fox and Friends” anchors aren’t the only ones wanting to file daylight saving time among historic bi-annual events, according to The Washington Times on Friday. A petition with over 7,000 names online addressed to President Obama is asking him to do away with this very old-fashion attempt to save energy.
When the daylight saving time first went into effect, most of the energy used was for lighting. That’s just not the case in the modern world. TV, entertainment games, computers and many other inventions of technology take up a good portion of the energy used today. Daylight saving time isn’t saving energy when it comes to these devices.
Changing the clocks does play havoc with people’s health, which includes increased heart attack risks in the days immediately following putting the clock ahead one hour. The “spring ahead” concept is to blame for “hundreds of thousands of hours of lost productivity in the workplace,” according to the Washington Times.
Studies show accidents on the nations roads increase in the days immediately following the time change. One recent survey added evidence to what the experts have said for years, “One hour of sleep loss generates a sleep-starved society of epidemic proportions,” the Better Sleep Council states.
Some of the more bizarre incidents shared by people who were feeling groggy due to the time change and the lost hour of sleep are actually comical. One man reports getting in the shower with his underwear on, while another tried to order food at an ATM. These are extreme, but you get the picture!
Until things change, daylight saving time dictates turning the clocks back at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2013. Most folks turn their clocks back on Saturday night before they go to bed so when they wake up on Sunday, they are going by the right time.
