Saturday, Mar. 30, San Pedro Square Market closes out Winter as Save Alternative Radio (S*ALT ) and Current Magazine continue their series of live music in downtown San Jose. Grand Finali presents Daydream Nation, a monthly concert series solely intent on celebrating Bay Area music scenes and their fans.
This month’s installment pushes things a bit harder, with a bill that includes a new visionary take on the Bay Area metal scene, and two progressive indie rock acts from your own backyard.
Judgement Day headlines an evening of rock that stretches genre definitions. The Oakland trio has one rule, as they go about their metal business: no guitars. Instead, JD is composed of Violinist Anton Patzner, Cellist Lewis Patzner, and Drummer Jon Bush. Along with a slough of effects, the threesome gets as crunchy and loud as any metal act. Their recent, critically acclaimed release, “Polar Shift,” is a reconstructionists dream within the genre; this is ‘can’t miss’ for metal lovers and beyond.
No less thrilling are the evening support acts; both local bands, both lending their own progressive take on indie rock. Prog-rock juggernauts, Case in Theory, draws from a wide array of influences to create a highly emotional experience. They’ve been showcased in everything from Bay Area’s Live 105’s programming to absolutepunk.com.
Also in support, the up-and-coming sounds of A Yawn Worth Yelling. The two year-old quintet explores rock inside and out; switching time signatures and weaving melodies in an equally beautiful and frantic way. Their latest single “Epithet” can only be described as a mind-blowing display of thoughtful constructed, whimsically executed amiability.
As always, this Daydream Nation series is free and open to all-ages, beginning at 7 p.m.
