A daycare van backed over and killed a 2-year-old late Tuesday afternoon in southwest Atlanta.

So far, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the name of the child whose autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. at 705 University Ave., according to Atlanta police.

Investigators said the daycare van had pulled into the parking lot at the location and dropped off several children.

“As the driver was backing out of the lot, the van struck the child,” police spokesman Officer John Chafee said. “It appears that the child was playing outside and went behind the van when the accident occurred.”

The child, who was not one of the children being dropped off, was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition and later died.

So far, no charges have been filed against the driver whose identity has not been released. But police said the investigation is still ongoing.
