Sometimes on our path to improving ourselves, we can become too goal oriented: I wish I was more calm, I wish I had more time, I wish I had more money and a better career, I wish I hadn't lost my temper, I wish I could be more grateful. While the ideas behind these thoughts are generally positive, they put our thoughts in the future, on an impossible ideal of perfection, and make these same things we seek seem far away and unattainable.

It's in those cases that it's important to remember that what we're trying to create is a positive lifestyle, where our day to day choices and actions are moving in a positive direction overall - and that simply takes one day at a time.

Mindfulness can begin with simply noticing where you are, and the simple pleasures around you. For example, on this cold, fall morning in LA, I see the clear skies and the falling leaves that have changed colors, as their paths have changed, and I remind myself that I, too, can adapt to whatever comes my way, while adding a bit of warmth and beauty to the world. You see what happened there? The thought began so simply (it's chilly but clear this morning), but quickly transitioned into a powerful awareness (I can change gracefully, too!), which is indeed where true power is - in the present moment.
