After the sumptious feast the people from Bordellaire served, the missionaries thought they would sleep well but it wasn't to be. "It was an eight pound spider," yelled Maria, and sleep was out of the question for those sleeping on the floor in that room. Amber was smart and "bailed for a better sleeping place," but others stayed and found it hard to relax.
They got up early and it was great that they did. Between 7 AM and noon they saw 240 patients. A large amoubt but it felt like a cast of thousands. The people of that village were welcoming and gracious, and of course the children were beautiful. I don't think there's a plain-looking child on the entire island.
After leaving Bordellaire, Betty Prophete, the co-founder of Haitian Christian Mission, led the FAME volunteers to the Dominican Republic. The plan was to go shopping for an hour or so. Didn't happen. A Haitian official got in the bus with the group to vousch for them, but when they got to the DR side they weren't allowed to stay. The reason was all the suitcases in the back. They thought the missionaries and their Haitian interpreters were going to move to the DR. The funny thing was--if they had opened the suitcases they woud have found a variety of drugs, which would have been even more suspicious. The medical evangelism group from FAME carries their pharmacy with them, all bought or donated by folks from the US. Lives are saved because of those pharmaceuticals, and the group, as well as the Haitians, are grateful.
Another long drive back to Fond Parisien, lots of re-organizing, praying together, and finally bed. Long overdue sleep.
