Day of the Dog event in Savannah

(c) Ron Burns Burns Studios                  "Portrait of a dog"

Melissa Burkholder is one of the main volunteers for the Savannah Chatham Metro Animal Control. She had her own dogs get out of her yard one day to only find two of the quickly. She then had to go down to Animal Control to retrieve the other two. With this she noticed the lack of help and the great need of it for this organization to run sufficiently. She began volunteering her time to walking dogs and helping with the animals. She got a group of volunteers together that all started to help with these daily tasks. One of the women in the group was Cindy Tower. They established a friendship over the similarities of their love for animals.

Cindy Tower is a teacher of the arts. She is teaching her students how art can impact the community and by helping the Animal Control they will be doing just that. Melissa Burkholder and Cindy Tower are holding the first “Day of the Dog” event on February 20th at the Oglethorpe Square downtown. It will start at 3:00pm. Here pet owners will be able to have the painters create pet portraits in exchange for donations. They will also have their own works exhibiting paintings of animals in their cages. All the proceeds will go to the Savannah Chatham Metro Animal Control to help with furnishing the new building.

This will also be a way for the community to see about getting involved with Animal Control and the possibilities of volunteering. For more information, call Melissa Burkholder at (912) 844-4524.
