Day care worker tapes toddler to floor, forcing child to sleep (Video)

When a day care worker tapes a toddler to the floor, it makes headline news. Alicia Lyons was arrested and fired from a Kentucky Mustard Seeds Child Care on suspicions of child abuse, for allegedly using duct tape to force a child to sleep.

Parents of an 18-month old child reported the incident to Ludlow police on Wednesday. However, the matter allegedly took place in October. They claim that Lyons, 20, and another child care worker at the facility used tape to secure the toddler during nap time, according to Fox News.

Authorities investigated the matter, and later arrested the day care worker for taping the toddler to the floor. She was booked at the Kenton County jail Thursday, and later released to face charges before a judge on a future date.

Officials at the Mustard Seeds Child Care location responded swiftly and fired both workers for violation of their company policy regarding childcare and abuse. Although they are working with police during the ongoing investigation, center officials say the incident is an isolated one.

While the story on the surface sounds callous and egregious, readers are mixed about details of the alleged child abuse, citing a Christian Post story.

"I think the person who made these accusations needs to see what she has done. Why didn't she tell about it when it happened, not when she heard someone else talking about it some time later," one reader said about the day care worker who taped the child to the floor.

"We obviously don't have the whole story on this yet but anytime you have 'duct-tape' and '18 month old baby' in the same sentence its bad," wrote another reader about the alleged child abuse at the Kentucky day care center.

Tampa Bay also has its share of stories alleging child with child care workers:

Last year in February, a man and woman were arrested in Tampa, Florida for child abuse. According to ABC News, the couple used a taser on a 13-year-old boy in their care as a form of discipline. The abuse was only discovered when the child told peers at school about the incident.

And in March of 2011, a Hillsborough County investigator, making a surprise visit to the Children's Adventure Center, found a child alone in a facility transport van. Police later arrested the director of the Central Avenue location, and booked them with child abuse and endangerment. Reportedly, the child was left alone for three hours, citing a 10 News report.

Perhaps the day care worker who taped the toddler to the floor used bad judgment in trying to quiet a restless child. However, the discovery of the matter underscores the need to shore up site monitoring. Reportedly, the worker’s former employer is installing cameras.
