Day 7 at the 2014 Little League World Series (LLWS); results, scores, schedule

Wednesday, August 20, 2014 was the seventh day of games at the Little League World Series (LLWS) in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and two games were played after a 90-minute rain delay. The Little League games are shown live on ESPN and ESPN 2, and each game can be viewed on the ESPN website at any time.

The Philadelphia and Las Vegas Little League teams were undefeated before Wednesday’s games and their game had the highest attendance of fans at Lamade Stadium in South Williamsport. The line started to form at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning as people waited to get into the stadium.

The winner of today’s games will move on to Saturday’s US and International Championship games. The losers will play the Chicago and Mexico on Thursday for one more chance to make it to Saturday’s game. In a surprise win, South Korea defeated Japan on Wednesday. The Japan Little League team had a 12-game winning streak at the LLWS, and won the championship game last year.

The Las Vegas team had very high scoring games during this LLWS, and Wednesday night they scored three runs in the first few minutes of the game and made five runs in the final inning. Mo'Ne Davis pitched during the first few innings for the Philadelphia team, but then stepped out so that she would still be eligible to pitch on Saturday if they make it to the US Championship game. She will not be eligible to pitch tomorrow.

Wednesday, the four undefeated teams played each other at the 2014 LLWS games. Here are the scores for Wednesday’s games, according to the Little League website:

South Korea 4, Japan 2

Philadelphia 1, Las Vegas 8

Tuesday, Mo’Ne Davis from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Little League team appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated; Mo’Ne came into the media spotlight over the last week as the pitcher of her Little League team. Mo’Ne Davis is the youngest athlete ever to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Mo’Ne has been called the best player on the Philadelphia Little League team, and her pitches average 70 mph. Thursday, two games will be played at the 2014 LLWS. Winners of these two games will immediately move on to the US and International (semi-finals) games on Saturday. Here is the schedule for Thursday, August 21, 2014:

Mexico vs. Japan at 3 p.m. (Eastern)

Chicago vs. Philadelphia – 7:30 p.m.

The Las Vegas, Nevada team is the Little League team to beat at these games. They have moved through their games quickly and have dominated the two teams they have played so far, and in each game by more than 10 runs. For more on this story, click here.

This is the 75th annual Little League Baseball World Series and each year the LLWS games are played in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The annual LLWS event brings tens of thousands of families, fans, and players from around the world to watch 10 day of games. The LLWS games can be dramatic, heart breaking, or an absolute joy for the winning teams. Making it to Williamsport is a hard earned dream for most of the 11 – 12 year olds (and 13-year-olds whose birthday is after May 1, 2014), and most of the players are astute baseball fans.

Each year, the LLWS starts with sixteen teams; eight United States (US) and eight international teams. It’s double elimination and each team gets to play three games at the LLWS with the final game being a consolation game. The final championship game will consist of one US team and one International team, and that game will be played on August 24, 2014.

If a LLWS team loses or wins at the LLWS games, they return to their suite-like surroundings at The Grove and get to live like rock stars for the time they are there. Amenities include: a large swimming pool, video games, a room full of ping pong tables, and new friends who have come from all over the world. No parents allowed!
