In an effort to express how the music of John Mellencamp touches our everyday lives, a display of one picture and one lyric, will be posted every day as part of a year-long project. Images and thoughts to ponder. This is picture #69.
Hurt So Good from American Fool
When I was a young boy,
Said put away those young boy ways
Now that I'm gettin' older, so much older
I love all those young boy days.
With a girl like you,
With a girl like you,
Lord knows there are things we can do, baby,
Just me and you.
Come on and make it
Hurt so good.
Come on baby, make it hurt so good.
Sometimes love don't feel like it should.
You make it hurt so good.
Don't have to be so exciting
Just tryin' to give myself a little bit of fun, yeah.
You always look so invitin'
You ain't as green as you are young
Hey baby, its you.
Come on, girl, now, it's you.
Sink your teeth right through my bones, baby.
Let's see what we can do.
Come on and make it
Hurt so good.
Come on baby, make it hurt so good.
Sometimes love don't feel like it should.
You make it hurt so good.
I ain't talkin' no big deals
I ain't made no plans myself.
I ain't talkin' no high heels
Maybe we could walk around all day long,
Walk around all day long.
Hurt so good.
Come on baby, make it hurt so good.
Sometimes love don't feel like it should.
You make it hurt so good.
Hurt so good.
Come on baby, make it hurt so good.
Sometimes love don't feel like it should.
You make it hurt so good.
Hey, hey
Yes, sometimes love don’t feel like it should. Sometimes it hurts so good.
And sometimes it just hurts.
We search and we search to find that one true love, and when we do, it’s like a dream come true. Our very own happily ever after, a true love, one destined to spend forever together. For some of us it actually happens like that.
For the rest of us, we spend years, even a lifetime, trapped in the push and pull of an unhappy relationship. Yes, there might be love, but it isn’t enough. It could never be enough to sooth the hurt, quiet the rage, or disguise the misery. There’s no talking because no one’s listening. There’s no honesty because the whole experience is just another lie. There’s no kindness because it only gets in the way of keeping score. Nothing’s real, it’s all in the image and how well we can pretend. We keep busy, living separate lives, so we don’t have to spend time together. We don’t really have to face what we’ve given up or the time we’ve lost. We know we won’t ever get it back, but we don’t really seem to care. Too much time has passed and this is as good as it’s going to get. Two people alone in their misery, because it’s easier to stay than walk away.
Sometimes though, we find the strength and the courage to say goodbye. One day we wake up and realize we deserve something more, something better; a little happiness, and a little bit more than the love that was never enough. We’re tired of the fighting, the silence, the loneliness, and the lies. We just want something real.
So we begin again, right back where we started so many years ago, searching for that one true love. Looking for that dream come true. A last chance at happily ever after. And in time we realize it wasn’t the leaving that was the hard part. It’s starting over again. What we thought we left behind is with us all the time. What we thought we let go of only held on. A lifetime of anger and pain and it keeps us believing in love, that its one in the same. We want what we know, rather than what we don’t. In familiarity we find comfort. To open up our eyes, our world, to something new, to something real, is sometimes more than we know how to feel.
If only we knew how to let it all go.
Sometimes love don’t feel like it should…
Love and Happiness~ Christine
